Upright Sedum (Stonecrop) | My Collection
Early Flower Stage On Autumn Fire Sedum

The Sedum group is commonly referred to as Stonecrop. Perhaps they get that common name because they're so widely planted in stone or rock gardens due to their tolerance of dry, warm - even hot - planting locations. Here's a look at my collection:

Conga Line Sedum, Sedum telephium, ‘Conga Line’, Zone 4-9 Conga Line Sedum Changes colors throughout the season, as leaves change from green to purple to burgundy, and then flowers change from peach, coral, and cream. It will reach 20 inches tall and wide.

Dynomite Sedum, Sedum ‘Dynomite’, Zone 4-9 Dynomite is one of the shorter varieties, reaching 6-8” tall by 12" wide. It has deep rose flowers and dark reddish foliage that changes throughout the season from green to purple to red.

Neon Sedum, Sedum spectabile ‘Neon’, Zone 3 I really like the name of this one, as the rosy-magenta flowers almost glow. If you get a prolonged fall, you'll also get a gold fall color on the leaves. Neon has large flower heads, as you can see here, which are supported on very sturdy stems. The plant reaches 24" tall x 18” wide.

Dazzleberry Sedum, Sedum ‘Dazzleberry’, Zone 4-9 Dazzleberry is a short variety that grows to about 6-9" tall but over a foot wide. Its raspberry-pink flowers are paired with a muted, dusty green leaf.

Autumn Fire Sedum, Sedum ‘Autumn Fire’, Zone 3-9 I really like this Sedum. It has star-shaped flowers with a deep pink color. When the flowers first begin to open, they have a candy-cane look. It can easily reach 2' x 2'.

Back In Black Sedum, Sedum ‘Back in Black’, Zone 3-9 This is a good variety if you are looking for dark or black foliage. It can also reach a 2' x 2'  foot range with flowers that transition to red, pink, and a hint of white.

Thunder Head Sedum, Sedum ‘Thunderhead’, Zone 4-9. What a great name! I love the deep rose flower color on this Sedum. It can easily reach 30" tall and has sturdy stems to support the large flowers.

Dark Magic Sedum, Sedum ‘Dark Magic’, Zone 4-9
Out of all the Sedums looked at in this post, Dark Magic is the only one that is (so far) self-seeding and naturalizing itself in this rock bed. It will get wider than tall, coming in at about 12-15" tall x 20-24" wide on average. Along with the dark purple foliage, it boasts a deep pink flower.

Autumn Charm Sedum, Sedum telephium ‘Lajos’, Zone 3-9
Autumn Charm has a variegated leaf in sharp contrast to the other varieties looked at in this post. It is light green with a white band on the margins and serrated edges. White flower buds will open to pink and slowly turn into brick-red tones.

Autumn Joy Sedum, Sedum spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’, Zone 3-9
I remember this as a variety that has been around a long time and is still heavily sold in garden centers. And for good reason. It's a solid performer year after year, with large clusters of pink flowers on lighter green foliage reaching 18-24 inches tall and wide.

Double Martini Sedum, Sedum ‘TNSEDDM’, Zone 3-9 I love this name! What stands out here are the contrasting maroon stems with olive green leaves. Martini has loads of smaller pink flowers in clusters. The average size is 18" x 18". Double Martini is a favorite of mine, and I highly recommend this Sedum.

Matrona Sedum, Sedum ‘Matrona’, Zone 3-9
Another nice-sized Sedum that will reach the 2-foot range. It has a fleshy gray-green leaf with prominent red veins in the center. The pink flowers on this Sedum are said to resemble broccoli.

The Sedum group does not like standing water or saturated conditions. I like to leave the tops on in the winter, as they provide food for birds and have excellent winter interest when the heads are peaking above the snow. Sedum stems are easy to cut and clean up in the spring after winter.
