Arborvitaes have soft scale like leaves and they offer a variety of different shapes, sizes, and colors that can enhance the look of your gardens. There are so many different varieties to choose from, you're sure to find a favorite that is perfect for your needs.

The globe arborvitaes can be hard to tell apart as they all look very similar. The different varieties are mostly sold according to their eventual mature size. The Golden Globe Arborvitae is the exception. You can avoid pruning by planting the proper variety. Check the label and give your Arborvitae ample room to fill out into its mature size.

But you can certainly prune Arborvitaes to keep them at the size you prefer. For best results, a light shearing becomes an annual event. If you wait too long, and take off too much growth at one time, you can ruin the look of your Arborvitaes, and end up with unnatural shapes.
